STEPHEN IN HIS OWN WORDS

stephen gatey 1995

"I couldn't be horrible to someone. I always treated people with respect and equally, it's in my blood, in my nature."  - 1998

SITE UPDATE & NEWS

On the 5th and 6th of June 2026, Boyzone reunited for two special farewell shows at the Emirates Stadium in London. And, of course, they couldn't leave Stephen out of such a monumental event! Once again, the boys kept their promise to keep his memory alive and celebrate his life, dedicating part of the show to him. Stephen's family was also in attendance, with Michelle (Stephen's sister), Tony (Stephen's brother), and Stephen's nephews showing up to support the boys.

Aside from portraits of Stephen appearing on screen throughout the show, as well as photos of the band as a five-piece, Ronan, Shane, and Keith dressed in red—a nod to Stephen's favourite colour—and performed a few songs as part of the tribute. Mikey, who came on stage at the beginning of the tribute section, wore a touch of red in the form of accessories. Ronan, Keith, and Shane also lovingly reminisced about Stephen's stage antics and quirks and briefly spoke about grief and loss.

The tribute included the songs:

  • Better

  • Gave It All Away

  • One More Song

Stephen's vocals echoed throughout the stadium during "Better" and "Gave It All Away", serving as a reminder of his everlasting legacy. Not only that, but the boys also opened the show with "A Different Beat", featuring Stephen's voice singing the first verse—a gentle reminder that he is still very much a part of the band.

The two special nights brought a wave of nostalgia to the fans, along with joy, cherished childhood memories, and a deep sense of gratitude and love for the band that shaped their lives and helped make them the people they are today. It may be over—for good this time—but it's not really the end when fans have so many memories to cherish for a lifetime.

And there's more good news: a new Sky documentary about the lead-up to the two shows is currently in the making and will be released later this year, so keep an eye out for that!

In the meantime, here are a few tribute videos from the shows:

Following the release of the documentary, Stephen's sister Michelle was interviewed on The Ray D'Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio 1 where she talked fondly about her brother and how proud he would be of the series. You can listen to the interview here.

Sometimes people say, 'Do you not get upset? Do you not feel sad?' And I say, 'No' because even in the documentary, they made him feel very much alive. You could hear his voice talking when you were watching it.

She also talked to Evoke where she shared how she keeps her brother's memory alive at home and what her children thought of the documentary.

In our home, there is not a day that goes by that he is not spoken about. My three children (Jordan, Liah and Matthew), one of them would say every other day 'Oh this reminds me of Stephen.' I have pictures of him in the house and I always have his music playing in the background. It still feels like he is around.

The reviews for Boyzone: No Matter What are in, and the response from critics has been overwhelmingly positive!

The Irish Examiner called it "one of the most insightful, emotional music documentaries I have seen in years."

The Guardian gave it a rave review, describing the scenes involving Stephen as "poignant."

The documentary has also sparked considerable discussion online, some of which can be found on our Twitter/X account. Many viewers were saddened by the pressure Stephen endured before coming out and were outraged at Louis Walsh for seemingly suggesting that he was the one who outed Stephen to the press in 1999.

It's here! "Boyzone: No Matter What" is now available to watch on Sky and NOW. You can now find stills from the documentary on this page.

The SKY documentary "Boyzone: No Matter What" held its world premiere on January 27, 2025, at The Roundhouse in London and was followed by a special screening in Dublin on January 29. And of course Keith brought a touch of red on the red carpet to bring part of Stephen with him!

I'm wearing his shirt. His favourite colour was red, he loved the print and he loved sequins. I'm representing my brother in this shirt tonight."

Michelle, Stephen's sister, also attended the London premiere with her husband and two of her children, Jordan and Liah. They reunited with Stephen's former partner Eloy De Jong.

This picture really means a lot to me. Stephen always had such a strong bond with his sister Michelle and Alan along with his son Jordan went everywhere whenever Steo and I were in Ireland. Will never forget when Stephen and I found out Michelle was pregnant with Liah when Michelle, Alan and Jordan were visiting us in Holland. To be at this premiere together so many years later feels very special and I'm sure it made Stephen very proud.

A three-part documentary series documenting Boyzone's rise to fame is in the works and will be coming to Sky and NOW later this year. The documentary is called "Boyzone: No Matter What" and will "explores the key events that shaped the band." It is being produced by Curious Films.

According to Sky there are "three, hour-long episodes, each focusing on different phases of the band’s lifespan.

The episodes are:

  • Love Me For A Reason – which focuses on the formation and early years of the group, including the height of their stardom.

  • When The Going Gets Tough – which delves into the tougher times for the band, including the media scrutiny they faced, Stephen Gately coming out as gay, and their eventual break up.

  • When All Is Said and Done – covers the band reuniting for a new tour, the tragic death of Stephen Gately, and their reflections on the band as a whole."

Apparently we can expect exclusive interviews and footage of the boys! Who's excited?

Some of you might remember that in September 2020, a Dublin councillor had put in a motion to rename the Royal Canal linear park at Spencer Dock near Sheriff Street the "Stephen Gately Park". Sadly, it looks like Stephen won't be having a park named after him anytime soon. According to the Dublin Inquirer:

Dublin City Council rules say the council must wait for 20 years after a person’s death before commemorating them in a place name. The council also doesn’t name parks after people, said a council spokesperson.

The council has agreed that both Loftus and Gately should be honoured in the naming of the city in the future, says O’Farrell. But those decisions are not formally recorded anywhere.

This is really disappointing news to say the least. I think most of us agree that Stephen should have a memorial of some sort in Dublin, and near Sheriff Street or Seville Place would be ideal given that it's where he grew up. Fortunately it seems that independent Councillor Damien O’Farrell agrees:

While we may have to wait until the 20th anniversary of Stephen's passing for Dublin to have a proper memorial for him, you can still go and see the bench we had made for him in Dillon's Park in Dalkey, a place Stephen loved to catch his breath and relax in. And the view from it is simply stunning. :)

This past Friday, Channel 5 aired 'Britain's Favourite 90s Songs' from 1998 and without surprise 'No Matter What' made the list, at a very decent #4 spot! A handful of musicians, radio presenters and TV personalities commented on the songs in the list, and amongst those who talked about 'No Matter What' are Shane Lynch and his sister Edele from the band B*Witched! You can watch below as celebs reminisced about Stephen and his amazing vocals on the song. ♡

Without a doubt that was Stephen Gately's baby, No Matter What. That was his proudest moment.

The lyrics of the this song, it's about belief. And Stephen really buys into those lyrics, he really delivers them and gets them across to the listeners and to the audience.

I find myself getting quite emotional actually when I'm listening to this song. And I really love to remember him, yeah, singing this in this way.
