Stephen launched his solo career in early 2000 after Boyzone decided to take a break after over 6 years together. After recording 'Shooting Star' for the Disney movie Hercules in 1997 and 'Bright Eyes' for the soundtrack of the new Watership Down TV show in 1999, Stephen co-wrote 7 songs out of 12 for his debut album, New Beginning and worked with well known music producer Steve Mac and Anders Bagge to bring the album to life.

 "I knew exactly what route I wanted to go with this. With Boyzone we're most famous for our ballads. For this album, I wanted something different. I didn't want what was expected, which was 12 cute little ballads. I wanted a little bit of uptempo, mid-tempo, some ballads and a little touch of R'n'B; That's the type of music I listen to."
